| Who could’ve guessed? Turns out nicotine in e-cigarettes actually helps your memory. In research shown at the British Psychological Society’s annual conference that was held April 18-20 of this year, 2012, was evidence that e-cigarettes help memory, as well as ease cravings for smokers trying to quit. A total of 85 volunteer smokers took part in this study lead by Dr. Lynne Dawkins, from the University of East London, UK. The participants we all shown how to vape using an electronic cigarette, which they were told to smoke for 5 minutes. Some of the users had e-cigarettes with nicotine and some didn’t. They were then asked to take a cravings and mood questionnaire, which they did again 20 minutes after using the e-cigarette. 60 volunteers also completed a memory task 10-15 minutes later, to see how well they would do. The results will surprise you. The e-cigarette with nicotine helped improve the mood of more men than women. The placebo e-cigarette had the same effect with women as the nicotine e-cigarette. Volunteers with nicotine e-cigarettes tested better for memory tests than the placebo users. Because so far little research has been done on e-cigarettes and Dr. Dawkins said she would explore the effectiveness of e-cigarettes, since they look so promising for smokers: “Perhaps more significantly, we found that e-cigarettes with nicotine help maintain working memory in smokers who have not smoked for an hour or two. People who choose to stop smoking without using a nicotine substitute may therefore suffer a period during which their working memory levels dip until their bodies adjust to the reduced levels of nicotine. E-cigarettes seem to be effective at reducing this problem for men and women. However, in this study we did not look at the issue of whether people feel self-conscious about using the devices in public” she stated. | Symptoms of Quitting Smoking |
| When a smoker stops to inhale tobacco smoke, or replaces it with significantly cleaner e-cigarette vapor, the body starts a self healing process that can last from several months, to sometimes several years until all the damaged organs, such as the throat, lungs and gums, have fully recovered. It is important to know what to expect when quitting smoking using electronic cigarettes, and the associated tobacco withdrawal symptoms. Nicotine is not the only addictive substance in tobacco smoke which is generally comprised of several thousand different chemical compounds. A major culprit is tar, which is a thick and oily substance that sticks to the mouth (teeth!), nasal passages and airways. Coughing is the most common symptom of quitting smoking and a way for the body’s system to clean out the accumulated layers of tar and carbon, that come out when hoarking in the form of brown mucus and phlegm (sputum). For that same reason, some smokers experience a hoarseness in their voice, and the feeling of a lump in the throat, which usually does not last longer than a couple of weeks. In other instances some have reported having acne (or quit zits), which are essentially toxins coming out through the pores in the skin. Mouth ulcers may also occur, depending on how long the mouth was submitted to smoke, and as the body’s natural healing process continues, it removes damaged tissue and replaces it with new tissue in the form of temporary lesions. To help the body recover quicker its a good idea to perform a daily exercise routine to make the body sweat, all the while drinking lots of water to replace the lost bodily fluids. Sweat filters out more toxins and speeds up recovery. If the water is not replaced quickly enough, some people will experience hiccups. | Dangers of Modified E-Cigarettes |
| You may have heard of Tom Holloway, a Florida e-cigarette vaper who liked to tinker with his modded e-cig, raising its voltage to get it to produce more vapor. Well, he’ll think twice before attempting to disassemble and modify his e-cigarettes in the future because one of his “inventions” literally blew him away. Mr Holloway has since been released from the hospital with a few burns and a broken tooth, but other vapers should learn from his mistakes, and the risks associated with short-circuiting or overloading any kind of battery. The electronic cigarette is simply composed of a low wattage lithium battery that is attached to a cartridge that generally contains propylene glycol, glycerol, nicotine water and differing flavors.” Just like with any electronic gadget, users shouldn’t open and toy with various internal components that may be dangerous when mishandled. Even a common “AA” battery may explode when short-circuited or heated and the same goes for batteries used inside e-cigarettes. | NZ Health Recommends E-Cigarettes |
| The New Zealand Ministry of Health Officially Recommends Electronic Cigarettes as a Way to Quit Smoking. It’s been years that tobacco lobbyists have been trying to cover up the advantages of electronic cigarettes over their tobacco counterparts. Profits is of course the main reason. But the truth cannot be withheld forever. Thankfully not all government Health agencies are as corrupt as the FDA which in 2008 prohibited the import of electronic cigarettes, and went as far as seizing e-cigarette shipments at customs. Following a lawsuit against the FDA, it was ordered by the United States Court of Law to withdraw its ban of e-cigarettes for two reasons: (1) The FDA had overstepped its legal boundaries in seizing shipments (2) The FDA has no concrete proof that e-cigarettes pose any health risks to humans. Not to mention the fact that tobacco cigarettes kill almost half a million americans every year, but those are OK. The least we can do is give smokers a choice between smoking tobacco or vaping nicotine with vegetable glycerin. The NZ Health Ministry recognizes these facts and actually promotes e-cigarettes as the healthier alternative. Hopefully for smokers, more honest health agencies will follow suit. |

Gilbert, from Beaver Falls, PA, who submitted this patent to the U.S. Patent Office (#3,200,819) as the original electric battery-powered, smokeless non-tobacco cigarette. | Clearing up the Smoke on Electronic Cigarettes |
| There are a number of false rumors circulating on the internet about electronic cigarettes, so here are some real facts to clear up the smoke! It appears that some biased newspapers have written falsely accusing articles about the safety of electronic cigarettes based on an FDA report from 2008. Specifically the FDA report stated that TSNA’s (Tobacco Specific Nitrosamines) were present in the electronic cigarettes that were tested. The report however omitted to specify in what quantities or whether those quantities are harmful to humans. Another clinical report, this time performed in New Zealand, showed too that TSNA’s were present in electronic cigarette vapor, but at levels that are thousands of times lower when compared to actual tobacco cigarette smoke. In other words, electronic cigarettes have actually been proven less harmful than tobacco! But here’s the killer: FDA-approved nicotine patches also contain trace levels of TSNA’s but nobody seems to raise any fuss about it! Think what you will.
